I designed JillMoser.net to keep the focus on the artwork. The images are the most important element, and they are optimized to be fast and look good on all screen-sizes.
Her website functions as an archive, including an impressive 800 unique pieces spanning 30 years of work. A simple layout that works on all devices is critical for the ideal experience, and the designs have evolved over the years to meet these goals.
Desktop Layout
In most desktop scenarios, the screen is wider than it is tall. If we want images to be displayed as large as possible, the navigation needs to be on the side instead of the top.
Mobile Layout
For mobile, I wanted the navigation UI to be as small as possible, while still communicating the essential context. To do this, I used the top-right to display the title of the current page. The top-left navigation button is a menu button on list pages, and it's a back button on detail pages. This design keeps the site feeling simple while supporting a large number of interconnected pages.
Exhibition Site
Jill Moser's Talking Pictures Exhibition featured artists who wrote accompanying narratives to pair with her imagery. In addition to the written collaboration, she invited them to record themselves speaking their part.
I recommended making a custom micro-site to make this experience seamless and fun to interact with. By not including this on the "main site" - I could optimize this site to load as fast as possible, with no confusing navigation elements.
People who purchased the book or attended one of her exhibits received a QR Code to open an exclusive webapp that integrates the audio with the pieces and the words.
